As we partner with colleagues across the nation in preparation for NPIAP’s World Wide Pressure Injury Prevention day on November 19th, we are presented with an opportunity to reflect and evaluate the changes we have made to improve our patients’ pressure injury outcomes.  The hard work that has been done and the great outcomes that have been achieved, are triumphs that deserve to be celebrated and shared.  Whereas, the poor outcomes need to be evaluated and opportunities identified to implement evidence-based changes for improvement.

Now is the time to implement evidence-based changes to decrease perioperative pressure injuries.  Pressure injury reduction interventions are abundant and available through AORN as well as the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), an independent not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to the prevention and management of pressure injuries.

NPIAP has created the World-Wide Pressure Injury Prevention Day to increase national awareness of pressure injury prevention and to educate the public on this topic.  NPIAP has done a wonderful job creating free materials for all healthcare settings for World-Wide Pressure Injury Prevention Day.  This event creates a link of awareness between inpatient and outpatient settings, through creating a goal of pressure injury awareness, across all areas of care.

As COVID cases increase, so does the risk for pressure injuries.

Bedsores kill over 60K people in the US each year. Amid COVID, experts worry more may be at risk.

Engage your colleagues, peers and units across your health system to participate and raise the awareness about pressure injury prevention.
