RNs are facing health and safety risks unique to their vital profession. Nursing is a very difficult and demanding career choice. RNs experience long hours, in addition to being called upon to work weekends and holidays. They provide hands-on care to people experiencing the most vulnerable situations. Their patients are often injured and suffering with pain while in need of constant attention and monitoring. Nurses frequently compromise their personal well-being to ensure the comfort of their patients.

Career resources are beginning to identify RN’s personal health needs in order to avoid errors on the job, fatigue, burnout and health problems. Today, RNs are seeking work life balance and have developed healthy routines to bring balance to their valued careers. They are making self-care a part of their daily lives. Some have followed the encouragement to general wellness and have chosen exercise paths that bring them joy. Others are keeping in touch with family and friends to support their overall well-being. Many found the benefit of joining professional organizations provided opportunities to share and grow.

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses may be an organization of interest as it empowers surgical nurses, health care organizations, and industry. AORN is the world’s largest professional association for perioperative nurses, offering opportunities to learn from like minded professionals from around the world.

As published in the article referenced herein, it was noted that nurses who believed they worked for a healthcare system that supports their holistic well-being experienced greater professional satisfaction.
