TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT PRESSURE INJURIES

Leg, Ankle and Foot

To prevent costly and painful pressure injuries, the proper patient positioner is important for surgical procedures.

AORN Guidelines state that “elevating the heels” or “offloading the heels” is an effective way to prevent pressure injuries to the heel and sacrum. “Positioning devices used to reduce pressure injury to the heels are designed to work in one of three ways: by cradling the heel in a gel or foam surface, by offloading the heel by supporting the Achilles tendon, or by providing a surface that distributes the weight of the patient’s leg along the calf.”
