His pursuit to develop a pressure relieving material, that would help prevent pressure sores in immobilized patients, has spurred a worldwide revolution in the pressure management industry.   Every year, hospital facilities spend an estimated $26.8 billion dollars treating hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) and their related complications. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid consider HAPIs to be "never events" and in 2008 eliminated reimbursement for costs associated with them. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, HAPIs have continued to increase, therefore, adding additional expenses to healthcare systems.

The Knee Crutch Pad is available in a variety of sizes and supports a variety of uses. SMALL: For use with small knee, crutch-type stirrups for urology and OB/GYN procedures. Can also be used underneath popliteal area in a variety of applications for pediatric procedures. 9" x 11" x 3/8" (22.9 x 28 x 0.95 cm) MEDIUM: This pad is larger then the model 40402. Suitable uses include padding for the iliac crest, under heels and elbows, and a kidney rest while patient is in the lateral position. 17" x 11" x 1/4" (43 x 27.9 x 0.6 cm) LARGE: Recommended for use with large urology-type stirrups. Can also be used for similar functions stated for models 40402 & 40403. A highly versatile pressure protection pad with vast utility for any O.R., cysto room or surgi-center. 22" x 20" x 1/2" (56 x 50 x 1.3 cm)

Dr. Heather D. Kooiker, DNP, MSN, RN, CNL, CNOR, CRNFA, is a Board-Certified Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) who also holds Certifications in Perioperative Registered Nursing (CNOR), along with a Registered Nurse First Assistant Certification (CRNFA). Heather serves Baxter International as the Director of Global Medical Affairs for Patient Support Systems and Global Surgical Solutions. She is also a Professor of Nursing at Davenport University where she integrates Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and Research into the classroom, preparing the next generation of nurses. Heather maintains her clinical edge by working as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) for an ambulatory plastic surgery center PRN.
